When
the famed Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, is forced into exile on a small
but poor Italian island, an unemployed local with a bike takes on a
job to deliver Neruda's mail up in his house on the cliffs. During
his daily visits, the mailman and the poet soon become friends, and
the poet's love poems inspires the mailman to become a poet himself
to woo the local beauty.
A very
well-made film by Radford, with perfect actors and characterizations.
In it's own silent way, the film is not only engaging and moving,
but surprisingly smart as well. Nice Oscar winning score by Luis
Bacalov, and Oscar nominations went to Troisi, Radford and Best
Picture as well. Sadly, Troisi died of heart failure the day after
the film finished shooting.
