Shanghai Grand **1/2 (out of 5) (1996)

Cast: Leslie Cheung, Andy Lau, Jung Ling

Directed by Poon Man Kit

A Taiwanese patriot and a street sweeper meet, then become embroiled through a series of circumstances into climbing the ranks of organized crime in 1940s China. Trouble between the two occurs when they are both in love with the same woman, causing a complicated love triangle with serious consequences, given that the girl in question is the mob boss' daughter, Ching-ching.

The film is a bit of a mess, although there are some interesting plotlines. It just never really grabbed me the way it should. The perfomers are good, but the directing could have been much better, taking a real downturn when Ting Lik (the street sweeper) is attacked by a giant rubber snake. Not bad, but I'd pass on this one.
