Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion (1997)
Two blonde airheads living in LA hear about their 10 year high school reunion in Tucson and set out on flaunting the success they never achieved in real life by making up stories of their affluence.
OK, chalk this one up on Vince’s list of “Guilty Pleasures” because I seem to enjoy this flick more than most. Comparisons to Dumb and Dumber are overstated, as Romy and Michele never stoops to the level of bathroom and sex humor that permeates many films of this “idiot” subgenre. Instead, it’s a lot of fun and while the two main characters are obviously airheads, they are actually more realistic as portrayed here since they know they aren’t too bright as well as being more three-dimensional in character than in other like films.
The cast is fun, the writing fresh, direction spot on, and good 80s soundtrack all add up to one of the funniest and hippest films of 1997. Thoroughly enjoyable.
