A River Runs Through It (1992)
Based on Normal Maclean’s story this tells the true story of two brothers growing up in Montana in the first half of the 20th century. They are sons to a strict but loving preacher (Skerritt), who teaches them the word of God as well as the merits of fly-fishing.
Robert Redford directs another gem, though a bit more quiet than some of his other works, but it still is a beautiful film to look at. Terrific cinematography, serene locations, and a deliberately slow pace all work their magic to creating a thoroughly compelling tale. It may be unremarkably slight in story, and really not a worthy book to make into a movie, but it’s done with such skill that it makes for quality entertainment for those who don’t mind the slowness. Pitt and Skerritt are particularly excellent in this nicely crafted slice of life worth investing the time in.
